Frequently Asked Questions

How is take-home pay calculated in Australia?

Take-home pay is your gross salary minus income tax, the 2% Medicare levy and any HECS-HELP repayment. Income tax for 2026-27 is nil up to $18,200, 15% from $18,201 to $45,000, 30% to $135,000, 37% to $190,000 and 45% above that. Superannuation is paid by your employer on top of your salary and is not deducted from it.

What is the tax-free threshold in Australia?

The first $18,200 you earn each year is tax-free if you are an Australian resident and claim the threshold with your employer. With the low income tax offset, you effectively pay no income tax until your income passes about $22,867.

How much superannuation does my employer pay in 2026-27?

The superannuation guarantee rate is 12% of your ordinary time earnings in 2026-27. On a $100,000 salary your employer contributes $12,000 to your super fund on top of your pay.

How do HECS-HELP repayments work in 2026-27?

From 1 July 2025 HELP repayments are marginal: you repay nothing below $69,528, then 15c per dollar between $69,528 and $129,717, and $9,028.35 plus 17c per dollar above that, capped at 10% of your repayment income.

Does this calculator include the Medicare levy?

Yes. The Medicare levy is 2% of taxable income, reduced or nil for low incomes (no levy below $28,011 for singles in 2026-27). You can also exclude it in Additional Options if you have an exemption.

Is superannuation included in my salary?

Usually not — most salaries are quoted excluding super. If your package includes super, tick "Amount includes superannuation" and the calculator works backwards to your base salary before calculating tax.
